Foreword by Debbie Blachford

Sailability
The opportunities for disabled sailing have never been greater. Sailing is one of the few sports where people with disabilities can participate on virtually equal terms with able-bodied sailors. It is also an enjoyable activity that can be shared with family and friends.

This directory gives you access to information on all aspects of sailing equipment catering for disabilities. From boats to pontoons, hoisting equipment and supporting services.

Many boats can readily be adapted to individual needs and the number of boats specially designed for disabled people continues to increase.

The Disability Discrimination Act has encouraged many clubs to make their facilities more accessible - whilst our Foundation Scheme sets a standard in terms of shore based accessibility, personal equipment, reasonable disabled changing and shower facilities, and well trained and informed volunteers.

We hope that the information contained in this publication aids clubs, training officers, and volunteers. Above all we hope that it allows disabled sailors to make an informed choice on the right type of equipment to meet their needs.

We are grateful to Geoff Smedley for his hard work in helping to create this online version and to The Nuffield Foundation for providing the funds for the first stock of paper based copies.

Individual pages can now be downloaded from our web site, as will updates and new additions. We always like to hear about new types of equipment so please share your experiences with us.
